President Buhari to open African Economic Conference
President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to officially declare open the 11th African Economic Conference (AEC) on Monday, December 5.
The president open the event alongside AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina, acting ECA executive secretary, Abdalla Hamdok, UN Assistant Secretary General and director of UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, Abdoulaye Mar Dieye.
The event with the theme “Feed Africa: Towards agro-allied industrialisation for inclusive growth. is slated for December 5-7 in Abuja.
This central theme is in line with the current African and global development agenda. Tackling poverty, hunger and food insecurity are central concerns of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) endorsed in September 2015 by UN member states.
The theme also builds on the African Union Agenda 2063 which underscore the right of Africans to be well-nourished and lead healthy and productive lives.
The annual event is organised by the African Development Bank (AfDB), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
The conference will provide an opportunity for particiP@nts to discuss Africa’s agricultural transformation by presenting the latest empirical evidence on how to leverage agro-industrialization for feeding Africa and promoting inclusive growth. It will also provide critical thinking on how policy-makers, development partners, the private sector, civil society organizations and the academia should support the planning and implementation of these industrialization strategies.
In another development, President Buhari is set to jet out of Nigeria again for an event in Dakar,Senagal.
A press statement by special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina says the president’s trip will last two days, from Monday, December 5 to Tuesday, December 6.
